The Head of Department must take up a leadership role within the Department of Nursing Science, setting a clear vision, and providing direction to a team of academics and support staff, to meet the objectives of the broader Faculty of Health and Wellness Sciences. The role has the primary responsibility of realisation of the business strategy in the higher education environment through the delivery of initiatives towards efficient and effective processes across the institution. To support the department in pursuit of its academic objectives which include: pursuing a management role of effective
coordination of resources, teaching according to a set syllabus, undertaking research, contributing to curriculum development as well as the engagement in work-integrated learning and community engagement activities. The Head must act in the ethical, professional and legal framework of the Nursing Act 2005 and guidelines of SANC for offering undergraduate and post-graduate programmes. In addition to meeting the core academic expectations, the incumbent should manage the department effectively and efficiently, in line with the CPUT policies and procedures including but not limited to (i) academic leadership, (ii) research management; (iii) HR staff management, (iv) financial management and (v) student management. It is expected that new and creative ideas will bring innovation and further developments to the department to maintain an environment of leaders for the future.

Minimum Requirements: Professor:
A relevant Doctoral degree in Nursing Science or equivalent qualification
At least 8 years’ higher education academic experience of which 5 years should be at the Senior lecturer level comprising of
managerial responsibilities.
Demonstrable track record of successful postgraduate supervision (Masters and Doctoral)
Demonstrable track record of publications in accredited and peer-reviewed journals over the last 5 years
Recipient of research grants and awards
Registration and in good standing with the SANC
Registration at SANC as a professional nurse, midwife, nurse educator and nurse administrator
Recommendations: Professor:
Registered as an assessor and moderator at SANC
NRF rating
High standing nationally and/or internationally in the profession

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Minimum Requirements: Associate Professor

  • A relevant Doctoral degree
  • A relevant teaching qualification
  • English as a major at undergraduate level
  • At least six (6) years’ teaching experience in Higher Education relevant to Intermediate Phase of which three (3) years must be at Senior lecturer level comprising of proven academic managerial experience
  • Record of research outputs: Publications in peer-reviewed accredited journals;  presentation of papers at professional conferences, post-graduate students supervised to completion relevant to the Education field
  • Recipient of research grants and awards
  • Experience as an external examiner/moderator
  • Experience in curriculum development
  • Knowledge of the HEQSF processes
  • Proven evidence of leadership qualities
  • Experience in financial management and budgeting
  • Experience in evaluating Teaching Practice

  • Management experience with an understanding of curriculum development; quality assurance, accreditation processes; financial and HR management of a department.
