About us
The Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship is the first academic centre in Africa dedicated to advancing social innovation and entrepreneurship. It was established as a specialised unit at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business in late 2011. The Bertha Centre’s Innovative Finance (IF) Initiative is built around the need to develop an impact-focused investment market in Sub-Saharan Africa, where social and environmental objectives are set and measured to demonstrate deliberate change.
About the Role
The Bertha Centre is seeking to appoint a Senior Project Manager with an emphasis on impact measurement and evaluation within its Innovative Finance portfolio. The role will focus on leading measurement and evaluation work in order to develop rigorous assessments of the development impact and funding additionality of innovative financing mechanisms. The successful candidate will also form part of the leadership complement within the IF team and routinely collaborate with other senior personnel to inform team strategy and operations.
Key responsibilities
Take a senior, leadership position within the Innovative Finance Initiative and team at the Bertha Centre, including:
– Delivering on strategic priorities and supporting the continuous development of the Initiative and Centre’s strategic direction in consultation with other IF Senior Project Managers
– Manage programme and project finances effectively ensuring long-term financial sustainability, including writing strong grant proposals to guarantee funding for future projects and managing current grant funding for the Innovative Finance section within the Bertha Centre
– Proactively identify and manage risks associated (financial, people, brand, etc.) with relevant initiatives and the Bertha Centre overall
– Support the development of the GSB’s and the Bertha Centre’s social finance and impact investment curriculum / Occasionally teach on GSB courses related to innovative finance and co-supervise students
Demonstrate & test high-impact potential financial innovations and business models
– Oversee identification and evidence building for innovative financial solutions that have the potential for high impact
– Oversee, design and lead the roll out of measurement and evaluation processes for innovative financial tools and mechanisms. This includes stakeholder management, fundraising, and designing/implementing evaluation and reporting frameworks
• Design and convene market building initiatives:
– Contribute to market building initiatives, for instance supporting work on Impact Investing South Africa
– Facilitate workshops with policy makers and other stakeholders, support and lead impact ‘consulting processes’ with stakeholders, such as financial institutions
– Represent the Bertha Centre and broker relationships in high-stakes settings, including participation, and oftentimes speaking, at national and international conferences and events
– Facilitate local and global relationships across sectors (private, public and civil society)
Oversee and conduct research and publish a range of reports and papers related to:
– International developments in impact investing, innovative financial instruments, and blended finance amongst other areas
– Policy perspectives and recommendations for national and provincial government, as well as multilateral organisations
Reporting and monitoring of project milestones
– Actively managing challenges and communicating with NORRAG teams based in partner institutions
– Take responsibility for ensuring financial and narrative reports are submitted as per grant agreements
– Presenting at international conferences and knowledge sharing forums
Requirements for the job:
An appropriate post graduate qualification NQF 9 (MSc, MBA, etc.), such as international business, finance, economics, programme evaluation, research and survey statistics etc.
A background in finance and/or evaluation (min 4 years’ experience)
Practical experience in implementing and managing evaluation projects e.g., RCTs combined with programme
evaluations (formative, mid-term review, summative) (min 2 years’ experience)
Extensive experience working with stakeholders across sectors (including private, public, and civil society)
Experience raising project-based funding from different stakeholders
Preferably, the candidate should have worked in impact investing in both developed and developing countries and have established an international network
High levels of initiative and eagerness to break new ground
Strong project management capabilities; effective in delivering on set objectives across multiple projects and initiatives
Ability to manage multiple, often complex and/or competing priorities (problem-solving skills)
Strong client-service and collaborative orientation
Excellent written and verbal communications skills
Effective budgeting and resource management skills
Strong quantitative and analytical skills
Comfortable navigating and managing within complex environments, comfortable with ambiguity
Ability to work under tight deadlines and deliver high quality work
Contract would be for a term of 25 months and compensation range commensurate on experience within job grade.
The annual cost of employment for 2022, including benefits, is between R671 593 and R790 107

Responsibilities include:
• Assist with proposal and protocol development and submit funding proposals
• Oversee the implementation of relevant LGBT+ research studies
• Ensure all studies meet required ethical standards, including correspondence with the
UCT ethics committee and the South African Health Products Regulatory Agency (SAPHRA)
• Develop relevant study documentation, including standard operating procedures
• Conduct research interviews, focus groups and surveys as specified by study protocols.
• Provide oversight of study databases and data analysis and ensure data integrity
• Write and publish study reports and publications.
• Organise appropriate functions for the development of the LGBT+ Research team and community partners including research awareness functions, symposiums etc
• Build and maintain collaborations with national and international NGO’s and research organizations

o Working with the outreach team to support a LGBT+ Safe Spaces programme and the Community Advisory Board.
o Working with the outreach team to plan and execute recruitment activities for LGBT+ trials.
o Working with team leaders and NGO partners to develop, monitor and report on project budgets and to ensure the division reaches the project milestones on time.
o Working with team leaders to provide regular updates and reports of progress and issues arising from the projects

management team of the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation Clinical Trials Unit and the Groote Schuur HIV Clinical Research Site, based at J52 Old Main Building, Groote Schuur Hospital. The Clinical Trials Unit Manager is responsible for providing smooth operational, human resource and financial management of projects and grants within a diverse multi-disciplinary research team. A background in Project Management is essential, with intricate knowledge of the systems and structures that are required to guarantee the successful operation of a large health unit.
Requirements:
• A tertiary degree in Health Sciences with business experience in a health environment.
• 3-5 years’ experience in a management role in a clinical trials unit or similar health or NGO environment.
• Experience in enhancing and supporting a large team of medical, administrative and
support staff.
• Project management qualification or related experience.
• A good understanding of grants and financial management.
• Computer literacy in MS Office (excellent proficiency in Excel) and working knowledge of SAP or similar financial software.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Demonstrated experience in continuous process improvement.
• Strong verbal skills and written communications skills (ability to articulate reports).
• Strong leadership skills.
• Strong analytical skills with creative problem-solving approaches.

Responsibilities
• Overall operational management of the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation (NPO)
Clinical Trials Unit and the Groote Schuur HIV Clinical Research Site housed within the University of Cape Town.
• Staff and Resource Management Directly line manage team leads including pharmacy, laboratory, administrative, regulatory and, senior study coordinators.
• Manage staff resources and ensure staff are adequately trained and supported.
• Ensure adherence to relevant HR policies with regards to attendance,
performance reviews and disciplinaries.
• Support the Lead Study Coordinators and Community Outreach Team with regards to Community Engagement and the Community Advisory Board
• Finance Support
• Responsible for salary allocations, expenditure authorization and invoicing.
• Oversee all financial and HR documentation according to DTHF and UCT policies and procedures.
• Review and compile study budgets with the support of the principal investigator and financial team.
• In collaboration with a finance team of senior management and grant
administrators, ensure ongoing sustainability of the unit including the review of monthly income vs expenditure.
• Administration/Operational
• Ensure that the unit has the adequate and suitable resources to complete its
activities (e.g. people, material, equipment etc.)
• Ensure all documentation requirements are met including the maintenance of
Standard Operating Procedures, adherence to Financial and HR policies and
procedures, sponsor and regulatory reporting requirements and staff training
documentation.
• Oversee all day to day operational, structural, IT and administrative processes
at the site to ensure the site remains fully functional at all times.
• Clinical Trial Management
• Assist with the start up of new studies and provide oversight for the pre-study
phase including feasibility, budgeting, contracting, regulatory and ethics submissions.
• Ensure proper conduct of clinical trials from feasibility and protocol
implementation to close out.
• Oversight of quality management, regulatory activities, training, coordination and site maintenance.
• Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the research
